Aim of the Programme ModuleThis programme module aims to equip the learner with the knowledge, skills, and competence to enable him/her to provide individualised holistic care using the activities of living as a framework to guide care practices.
Objectives of the Programme Module
  • Explore the concept of individualised holistic care and the multiple factors that influence the older person’s ability to perform activities independently
  • Ensure the learner has a clear understanding of the theory underpinning this model of living.
  • Facilitate the learner in developing the relevant practical skills for the provision of individualised holistic care.
  • Assist the learner in developing appropriate interpersonal skills, including effective communication.
  • Develop the academic and vocational language, literacy, and numeracy skills related to Activities of Living Patient Care through the medium of the indicative content.
  • Enable the learner to take responsibility for his/her own learning.

Learning Outcomes

Learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss a range of work practices in the provision of individualised holistic care for clients to include knowledge of the factors influencing the activities of living.
  2. Analyse the activities of living to include the five main concepts of the model of living and the role of a healthcare assistant in utilising the activities of living.
  3. Summarise the principles of maintaining a safe and hygienic environment to include knowledge of infection, accident, fire and problems with sensory deprivation.
  4. Implement a range of tasks carried out when caring for a patient in a safe environment to include effective communication skills.
  5. Employ the skills of a healthcare assistant in providing care for patients to include an awareness of the importance of nutrition, elimination, fluid balance, weight reporting and correct technique for catheter bag use.
  6. Practise skills involved in pressure area care, personal hygiene, foot care, patient temperature, mobilization and urinalysis.
  7. Demonstrate competence in a range of care techniques to include observations, manual and electronic counting, recording and reporting of pulse rate, respiration and blood pressure.
  8. Work independently and as part of a healthcare team to respond appropriately to the needs of a client in a care setting.

You are required to submit a written report of approximately 2,000 words on the care of a client with a sensory deprivation Or a behaviour that challenges.

1. Summarise the five main concepts of ‘The Model of Living’, according to Roper, Logan & Tierney (1980) (3 marks)

2. Outline your understanding of the stages of the Nursing Process Framework (5 marks)

3. Introduce and define the sensory deprivation condition or behaviour that challenges that you have chosen and its effects on Activities of Daily Living (4 marks)

4. Determine the level of assistance required by a client with a sensory deprivation Or Behaviour that challenges in carrying out their Activities of Daily Living (5 marks)

5. Demonstrate knowledge of a range of factors that influence an individual’s ability to carry out Activities of Daily Living (5 marks)

6. Discuss how you would maintain a safe environment for a client with sensory deprivation or Behaviour that challenges (5 marks)

7. Discuss the importance of effective communication with the client, keeping in mind their current medical condition. Also discuss the importance of clear communication with the Multidisciplinary Team (6 marks)

8. Outline your key learning’s in carrying out this report. (4 marks)
