In this NURS202 continuous assessment, Hibernia College nursing students work from one patient who has been started on a new medicine in hospital and is due for discharge in two days. The case study is split into three sections: the nurse’s role in safe medicines management, how an actual medication error is investigated and documented on a ward, and a patient education plan that prepares the person to take the medicine safely at home.
Module Learning Outcomes Assessed
- 2. Articulate the effect of various medications on health and illness.
- 3. Analyse the role of the nurse in patient education and patient safety related to medicines.
- 4. Critically analyse how to address near-miss incidents and actual medication errors, associated investigations and documentation.
- 5. Examine the linked legal implications for supply, distribution, prescription and administration and use of medicinal products as related to nursing practice.
Aim
The aim of this assignment is to help you understand medication safety in clinical practice, the avoidance of error and the importance of patient education.
Assessment Guidelines
A patient in your ward has been prescribed a new medicine during this admission and is due for discharge home in two days. Choose a typical patient and medication to create a framework for your case study, and analyse the important steps related to medicines management and safety in preparation for discharge using the sections below.
Section 1 (35 marks)
Analyse the role of the registered nurse in medication management and safety while caring for the patient in hospital. Make specific reference to safety and the avoidance of medication incidents, errors and near misses. Include in your analysis allergies, drug-drug interactions and drug-food interactions.
Section 2 (20 marks)
Give a brief overview of how to investigate and document an actual medication error in a typical hospital ward location. Include the role of the various clinicians who would most likely be involved in this investigation.
Section 3 (40 marks)
Discuss the role of the nurse in patient education for medicines management, with particular reference to preparing the patient for discharge home. Create a patient education plan for the patient, considering all the important safety information and who the patient should or could contact for further advice after discharge.

Section 3 carries 40 marks, so a vague discharge leaflet will not score well. Your education plan needs to cover the medicine’s purpose, dose and timing, side effects to report, interactions and who the patient can contact after discharge, and it should link back to the nurse’s role you describe in Section 1. Section 2 rewards a clear incident pathway, from reporting through the National Incident Management System to open disclosure and learning.
Our nursing assignment help in Ireland can guide you on structuring all three sections and using NMBI and HSE guidance correctly. You can also compare another Hibernia brief, the NURS201 professional nursing continuous assessment, or the NURS107 care needs of the older adult brief.
