Description:

This module will introduce students to evidence based clinical skills and introductory physical assessment techniques for clinical nursing practice. Students will have the opportunity to develop foundational knowledge and skills for clinical practice as this module will consist of theoretical and clinical skills elements. A holistic approach will be used to enable students to integrate theory with practice and to plan and communicate care accordingly. Students will be introduced to and gain knowledge of the process in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care which has a central focus on the provision of safe, quality, person-centered care. Students will develop their knowledge and skills to conduct a patient interview, undertake a comprehensive health assessment, develop physical assessment techniques, complete nursing documentation, plan and communication care as appropriate for the patient. Additionally, a range of clinical skills will be taught to facilitate a focus on safety while providing holistic patient centred care in relation to the activities of daily living.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1Apply knowledge, skills and professional values to deliver safe, high quality, person-centered care, relevant to their scope of practice and in recognition of NMBI requirements
LO2Prepare for clinical practice by successfully completing mandatory training requirements in manual handling, hand hygiene, CPR and fire safety
LO3Demonstrate understanding of the importance of a holistic nursing assessment, with implementation of the nursing process and outline the key principles of care planning in nursing
LO4Use effective communication skills to conduct a comprehensive, holistic nursing assessment and develop skills in history taking and completing the tools and documentation used in practice
LO5Develop competence in conducting skills for clinical practice (e.g.vital signs, height and weight, administering medications, patient positioning etc.)
LO6Begin to develop, describe and apply key principles and techniques used when undertaking a physical examination
LO7Recognise the importance of and understand the legal considerations regarding documentation in clinical practice
LO8Develop awareness of the deteriorating patient and use problem solving approach, clinical reasoning and decision making skills to plan and implement patient care
