CSAD 402 Assignment 2 

Design the Physical Implementation of a Car Cruise Control System.

1. Introduction

Figure 1 shows a model of a cars cruise control

The following specification for the control system is required:

  • Zero steady-state error in response to a unit step reference signal
  • 2% Settling time of 3s & 5%

2. Physical Implementation

Your task is to carry out a high-level design for the physical implementation of the control system. Your task is to:

  • Outline what type of motor might be used for the cruise control system and why.
  • Outline what sensors are needed and why (including the option of an observer if appropriate and feasible).
  • Outline what hardware/software would be used to implement the controller (you can use industrial standard equipment or design a prototype).
  • Outline how the controller will interface with the sensors and
  • Outline the control algorithm (at a high level, with a flowchart would be best, include the actual controller parameters identified above).

You do not have to identify specific items of hardware or software – just outline feasible options and detail what criteria would be important (e.g. what accuracy and response times would you be looking for?). Outline potential solutions for amplifying the controller output. Produce a schematic diagram to explain your solution.

3. Presentation

Prepare a brief presentation on your outline design and record a video of your presentation. This should be not more than 3 minutes long. See the instructions on ‘Assignment 2 Student Instructions for Recording’ for guidance on how to record and upload your presentation. No report is required for this assignment.

Grading

This assignment will contribute to 15% of the assessment for the module. See marking rubric on next page.
